Special Show at MiraCosta College-October 11
Oceanside CA— Two living legends who have followed in the footsteps of folksinger Woody Guthrie will be at MiraCosta College for a special performance this Wednesday, October 11, from 9 to 11 a.m. in Aztlan A&B at the Oceanside Campus, 1 Barnard Drive.
Award-winning author Tim Z. Hernandez will read from his new publication, All They Will Call You, accompanied by folk musician and North County resident Joel Rafael. The event is being presented by the MiraCosta College Puente Program in collaboration with the Department of Student Equity.
Hernandez is an award-winning poet, novelist and performance artist. His debut novel Breathing, In Dust was featured on NPR’s All Things Considered. His latest book, All They Will Call You, released Jan. 28, is based on a Woody Guthrie song, (Deportee) Plane Wreck at Los Gatos, a protest tune detailing the fatal 1948 plane crash and what Guthrie saw as the racist mistreatment of passengers before and after the accident.
Singer-songwriter and folk musician Joel Rafael has been performing for more than half a century, beginning as a drummer with a jazz combo in the sixth grade. He later found himself immersed by the rise of folk music in the 1960s and soon became the resident folk musician at his high school. Years later, he settled in North San Diego County and began a lifetime friendship with Eagles songwriter Jack Tempchin. As a solo performer and with his band, he has opened shows and shared stages throughout the Southwest with the likes of Crosby Stills and Nash, Emmylou Harris, Jackson Browne, Joan Baez and others.
A reception will follow the event at the Social Justice and Equity Center from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
