Oceanside CA— The MiraCosta College Theatre Department presents Heaven Can Wait written by Harry Segall. The play opens November 10 at the MiraCosta College Theatre, located 1 Barnard Drive, Oceanside. Tracy Williams will direct.
Heaven Can Wait is a fantasy-comedy with a plot full of twists, turns and loop-the-loops. Professional boxer Joe Pendleton is taken from his body by an over-eager angel, sixty years before his death date. Unable to return to his own body, he is given the body of Jonathan Farnsworth, a recently murdered millionaire tycoon, until a more suitable one can be found. There are lots of laughs, sighs, and an ending full of heart and even a touch of sadness. Director Williams emphasizes, “We are really playing up the melodrama and comedy of this piece. It has classic villains, lovers, comedians and heroes….oh, yeah, and angels from heaven who make mistakes and try to make things right. What’s not to love?”
“I’ve had this play on my list for a few years now. It involves lots of actors and there are so many types that there is opportunity for our advanced students and our beginners,” explains director Williams. “I fell in love with this story in 1978 when the film came out starring Warren Beatty. The story was so fun and the idea that a love story, a comedy, a romance and a melodrama could all exist in one play was exciting to me. The play was first produced in 1938, so it’s an older play, which means a lot of characters and a lot more opportunity for student involvement,” said Williams.
