MiraCosta College Offers Community Education Courses in Career and Work Skills

Oceanside CA— MiraCosta College’s Community Education is offering the following career and work skills, not-for-credit, courses this spring:

Blueprint Reading with GD&T This hands-on class helps students with blueprint reading and GD&T. Students learn to read and correctly interpret blueprints used in the manufacturing trades. They will get an opportunity to draw and edit simple blueprints through step-by-step development of multi-view drawings. In addition, students will learn the basics of geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T). This course is the perfect introduction to GD&T, symbols, applications and methods of inspection. Admin Fee: $75* Location: Technology Career Institute Time: 10 Wednesdays, 1/31–4/4, 5–8 PM.

Operación Española de Control Numérico: NUEVO; Este curso está diseñado para aquellos cuyo inglés es un segundo idioma y se beneficiarían de la instrucción en español. En esta clase, el primer día incluirá seguridad, una introducción a la terminología y lectura básica del modelo. El resto de el curso consiste en demostraciones y la instrucción práctica. Aprender como interpretar los códigos G&M y operar ambos un molino y torno HAAS CNC. Los estudiantes también obtener exposición al software CAD/CAM. Admin Fee: $175* Location: Technology Career Institute; Time: 14 Tuesdays & Thursdays, 1/16–4/19, 5–9 PM.

OSHA-10: Standard OSHA-10 safety course. Fee: $95; Location: Technology Career Institute; Time Options: Thursday, 1/11, 1–4 PM & Friday, 1/12 8:30 AM–4:30 PM; or Thursday, 1/18, 1–4 PM & Friday, 1/19, 8 AM–4 PM; or Thursday, 4/26, 1–4 PM & Friday, 4/27 8:30 AM–4:30 PM; or Thursday 5/10, 1–4 PM & Friday, 5/11, 8 AM–4 PM.

Manual Precision Measuring Workshop: In the advanced manufacturing and engineering fields, it is imperative to know how to measure accurately to ensure quality. This 15-hour class is an introduction to the importance of measuring and testing/inspection, the tools used and the applications for the various different tools. Students will have lots of hands-on practice measuring using calipers, micrometers, and gages. Admin Fee: $30* Location: Technology Career Institute; Time: 4 Mondays, 1/29–2/26, 5:30–9:30 PM; No class on 2/19.

Welding I Certificate: This course is designed to train students to qualify for an American Welding Society (AWS) code. The course will explore basic welding processes and procedures, safety, interpretations of blueprints/shop drawings, metallurgy, different fabrication tools, different welding qualifications, and procedure qualification.  In addition, students will receive a significant amount of hands-on training in:

  • OFC/OFW (oxyfuel cutting/oxyfuel welding)
  • SMAW (shielded metal arc welding)
  • GMAW (gas metal arc welding)
  • FCAW (flux core arc welding)
  • GTAW (gas tungsten arc welding)

Fee: $200* Location: Landes Recreation Center, 2855 Cedar Road, Oceanside Time Options: 11 Tuesdays, Wednesdays & Thursdays, 1/23–4/5, 5–9 PM; or 11 Tuesdays, Wednesdays & Thursdays, 4/17–6/28, 5–9 PM; or 19 Saturdays, 1/27–6/16, 8 AM–3:30 PM. No class on 2/17 & 5/26.

Welding and Metal Fabrication: If you are interested in welding and other authentic manufacturing processes, this class is a great introduction or opportunity to practice existing skills.

Topics include:

  • Oxy-acetylene welding, cutting, brazing and soldering
  • SMAW: electrodes and positions
  • GMAW: hardwire, short and spray arc, gas coverage
  • FCAW: inner and dual shield
  • GTAW: aluminum, magnesium, stainless steel, carbon steel, brass and gas coverage
  • Plasma arc cutting

Students will also learn fabrication math, specialty certifications, fabrication skills, job steps from start to finish, tacking, squaring, order of welding and basic critical thinking. Fee: $375 Location: Landes Recreation Center, 2855 Cedar Road, Oceanside Time: 15 Mondays, 1/22–4/30, 6–10 PM. No class on 2/19.

 PLC Programming I Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) systems have evolved to become the central component to most automation systems today. Learn the basic skills to program, troubleshoot and configure PLC-based automation installations. Allen Bradley and Siemens are two commonly used systems within the manufacturing and engineering industries. Take one or both courses to gain a foundation in PLCs. Note: A basic understanding of electrical circuitry is strongly recommended. Fee: $150 each Location: Technology Career Institute Class Options: Siemens Software Time: 4 Saturdays, 1/20–2/10, 12–5 PM; Allen Bradley Software Time: 4 Saturdays, 3/17–4/7, 12–5 PM.
