Oceanside CA– (Special Event) This musical is a feast for the heart, mind and soul. The highly original and theatrical Caribbean adaptation of the popular fairy tale ‘The Little Mermaid’ garnered eight Tony nominations for its Broadway run, including Best Musical, Book and Score. In almost non-stop song and dance, ‘Once On This Island Jr’. tells the story of Ti Moune, a peasant girl who rescues and falls in love with Daniel Beauxhomme, a young grande homme who is from the “other” side of her island. When Daniel is returned to his people, the fantastical gods who rule the island, guide Ti Moune on a quest to test the strength of her love against the powerful forces of prejudice, hatred and even death. This musical is a wonderful treat for the whole family.
In an effort to bring theatre arts to the middle schools in Oceanside, Oceanside Theatre Company has teamed up with the Oceanside Unified School District’s middle schools. This collaboration started last fall and the results have been fantastic. Oceanside Theatre Company Youth Academy Director, Deborah Dodaro, is now directing the musical ‘Once On This Island Jr’. at Martin Luther King, Jr. Middle school (the second school in the planned rotation).
“At our first school, Lincoln Middle School, we had a sweet cast of 14 students. All but three had never been in a musical or seen a live theatre production of a musical. I am excited that our cast at Martin Luther King, Jr. Middle School has grown to 40 kids . . . we are spreading the theatre bug!”
When asked what has been the most rewarding experience with this Musical Theatre program, Dodaro shares “There have been so many moments when I’ve had tears in my eyes. From seeing kids blossom in a matter of days to witnessing cast members hug and cheer each other on. I love that the kids in our program come to rehearsal and have found it to be a safe, fun . . . . like a home away from home. When I asked my cast how many would be continuing with theatre at the high school – they ALL raised their hands. I thought, ‘YES!’ the program is working. I had to smile when a cast member, Camille McKay, said that rehearsal process has taught her ‘life lessons’. I hope that every student who completes the program will move on with confidence, passion and respect for theatre arts and the continued desire to make a positive difference.”
When asked why she chose this play, Dodaro explained it has so much ‘life’ to offer. The play’s themes, music and characters are rich in meaning. At the first read through, cast members were laughing and crying. The OTC Youth Academy Director recognizes that this play has pushed kids to think about love, friendship, forgiveness, tolerance and the joy of storytelling.
