Oceanside CA- Oceanside Chiefs Rugby Club took on the Pasadena Men’s A-Side team for the Southern California Rugby Football Union Division II Championship and won in double overtime. 43-36.
Oceanside took a 21-10 lead into halftime but Pasadena was able to tie the match with less than a minute remaining 29-29. The double over-time win knocked the Pasadena team out of the playoffs. The A-side team were the defending SoCal champs and had advanced to the National Sweet 16 for three consecutive years, ending the 2013 season ranked 5th in the country.
With the win, the 10-1 Oceanside Chiefs will play an undefeated team from the Arizona Rugby Union out of Tempe, Arizona and a chance to travel to Texas for the National, Elite 8 tournament.
The Tempe Rugby Club, two time national champions, enters the sweet-sixteen match-up against the Chiefs(10-0) after beating Red Mountain out of New Mexico 21-15, last Saturday.
The sweet sixteen game will be at 3:00 p.m., Saturday, May 3rd on the Little Q Rugby field in San Diego.
