Oceanside CA– MiraCosta College’s San Elijo Campus will host a screening of the 1982 film “The Ballad of Gregorio Cortez” on Friday, June 6 at 5:30 p.m. The film is rated PG.
Edward James Olmos stars in this gripping true story, which is set in 1901 Texas. Two cultures – the Anglo and the Mexican – live side by side in a state of tension and fear. Gregorio Cortez, a young Mexican family man, shoots and kills a sheriff in self-defense. For the next 11 days, he eludes an inflamed posse of 600 Texas rangers in a 450-mile chase across Texas. His manhunt captures the nation’s interest and his eventual trial is tainted by extreme emotion. To some, Cortez becomes an instant folk hero; but to most others, he is considered a very dangerous criminal. It takes 12 years to learn the truth.
The film is free and open to the public. Free parking in any student lot. First come, first seated. Event features a special guest appearance by actor Pepe Serna.
MiraCosta College’s San Elijo Campus is located at 3333 Manchester Avenue in Cardiff. The event will be held in the Room 204.
