Oceanside CA– MiraCosta College will offer Mandarin Chinese when fall classes begin August 18. Chinese 101 will meet two days per week, and students will have the choice of either a late morning class on Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 11 a.m. to 1:20 p.m., or an early evening one on Mondays and Wednesdays, from 4:30 to 6:50 p.m. Chinese 102 will be added to the offerings in spring 2015, followed by Chinese 201 the following year.
“The 2013-14 academic year marked the first time MiraCosta College did not offer classes in Mandarin Chinese. But due to popular demand, the department has decided to bring it back,” said Department Chair David Detwiler. “We believe that Chinese will soon resume its place as an important part of the International Languages Program.”
One fifth of the planet speaks Chinese. Mandarin Chinese is the mother tongue of over 873 million people, making it the most widely spoken first language in the world. The study of the Chinese language opens the way to different important fields such as Chinese politics, economy, history or archaeology. To be at ease and effective in a Chinese environment, learning the language is half the battle, and knowing about the culture behind the language is the other. Chinese 101 addresses both.
