Additionally, more than 23 million pounds of food were donated to local food banks
Oceanside CA- Walmart and the Walmart Foundation announced that over the last fiscal year they gave more than $47 million in cash and in-kind contributions to charitable organizations throughout California. Globally, the company and its Foundation donated more than $1.3 billion to nonprofit groups, surpassing the previous year’s total by more than $244 million.
“We are so proud of the partnerships we have forged with dedicated people and organizations throughout the state to help us do more good for more people,” said Kimberly Sentovich, Senior Vice President, Walmart Pacific Division. “In San Diego, we were fortunate to team up with some new groups this year, and we look forward to seeing the great work these organizations will do in the community.”
Two of the San Diego-area organizations receiving grants from Walmart and the Walmart Foundation include Accion San Diego and Bayside Community Center.
Accion San Diego is a nonprofit microlender dedicated to connecting low to moderate-income entrepreneurs, many of whom are women or minorities, with the financing and resources to start and grow healthy businesses. Walmart and the Walmart Foundation provided $50,000 to support the organization’s small business loan program, which will benefit 100 female small business owners.
“We are delighted that the Walmart Foundation chose to support Accion,” said Elizabeth Schott, Executive Director, Accion San Diego. “Through Walmart’s support, we are able to continue our mission of empowering hard-working entrepreneurs and meet the increasing demand for our services from small business owners.”
Bayside Community Center was provided $25,000 to support its Food Security and Healthy Living Program. This initiative is aimed at meeting critical needs for those suffering from food insecurity, such as providing a senior lunch program, healthy food bags for after-school participants and a community garden, among other efforts.
“Walmart’s partnership has allowed us to increase assistance to some of our community’s most vulnerable – those who are unable to ensure their access to food. Our work helps supports the community and Walmart’s grant has helped strengthen Bayside’s Food Security program, enabling us to continue meeting the needs of our neighbors,” said Rose Ceballos, Director of Social Services, Bayside Community Center.
Additionally, since announcing the historic Fighting Hunger Together commitment in 2010 to donate 1.1 billion pounds of food and $250 million in cash by 2015, Walmart and Sam’s Club facilities have surpassed both goals one year earlier than projected. As of January 2014, Walmart and the Walmart Foundation have donated 1.58 billion pounds of food, the equivalent of approximately 1.32 billion meals, and have awarded $260 million in grants to hunger relief programs in the United States, exceeding their original commitment by four percent. Overall, Walmart has exceeded $2 billion of cash and in-kind commitments to fight hunger at the local, state and national levels.
In California, Walmart donated more than 23 million pounds of food to local food banks – equivalent to more than 19 million meals – in the last fiscal year. The retailer and its Foundation have partnered with Jacobs & Cushman San Diego Food Bank, Imperial Valley Food Pantry, Meals-on-Wheels Greater San Diego and more in the San Diego and Imperial counties region to provide expanded food services to homebound seniors and others in need.
“We are so thankful for Walmart’s support of our work in San Diego County and especially its contribution to helping us expand our service to some of our society’s most vulnerable – homebound seniors living in isolated areas of the region, removed from basic services,” said Debbie Case, President/CEO, Meals-on-Wheels Greater San Diego. “Walmart’s partnership ensures we can serve more of those in need in the days and years to come.”
