Third Person Killed by a Train in North County

Vista CA– Monday night August 11, 2014, at approximately 8:07 pm, Sheriff’s Rail Enforcement deputies responded to a train versus bicyclist collision on the railroad tracks at mile post marker 112, which is at the intersection of South Santa Fe Avenue and Woodland Drive, in the unincorporated area of Vista. A 48 year old male victim on a bicycle was struck by a Sprinter light rail train.

According to witnesses, the bicyclist was traveling eastbound South Santa Fe Avenue in the number one lane of traffic approaching the intersection. The railroad crossing gates were down and the lights and bells had been activated for approximately forty two seconds. All vehicle traffic in the area was stopped for the approaching light rail train. Prior to entering into the intersection, the Sprinter light rail train had sounded its warning horn as required. As the Sprinter entered the intersection, the bicyclist traversed the railroad tracks into the intersection and was struck by the Sprinter light rail train. The train operator applied the emergency brakes, but still collided with the bicyclist.

Lifesaving efforts were initiated by deputies and the Vista Fire Department at the scene and the victim was transported by ambulance to the hospital. The victim was later pronounced deceased at the hospital. The San Diego Sheriff’s Department Railroad Enforcement Unit was called to the scene and will be handling the investigation. Anyone with information about this case can call the Sheriff’s Department non-emergency line at (858)565-5200.
