Oceanside CA– “Family Open Studios Plus,” the free, art-making workshop designed for the whole family, will present two free performances by illustrator and songwriter Morgan Taylor and his animated creation, “Gustafer Yellowgold,” on Saturday, November 8 at the Carlsbad City Library, located 1775 Dove Lane. The City of Carlsbad’s Cultural Arts Office organizes and presents Family Open Studios programs in conjunction with each exhibition presented in the William D. Cannon Art Gallery. The event is scheduled to run from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. with Taylor taking the stage at 11:45 a.m. and 1:15 p.m.
Taylor’s performances take place next to a large video screen where he’s joined by animated illustrations that chronicle the exploits of Gustafer, a friendly yellow alien who has come to Earth from the Sun to live out an explorer’s life in a slightly fantastical version of the Minnesota woods. Taylor’s show has become an unusual cross-over success and has opened for popular alternative music acts such as Wilco and The Polyphonic Spree. The New York Times called Gustafer, “A cross between ‘The Yellow Submarine’ and Dr. Seuss.”
The appearance of Gustafer Yellowgold complements the current Cannon Art Gallery exhibition “The Original Art: Celebrating the Fine Art of Children’s Book Illustration,” featuring more than 50 colorful works of art from the 2013 Juried Original Art Exhibition at the Society of Illustrators in New York, as well as works by numerous familiar Southern California illustrators. Admission to the Cannon Art Gallery is free.
Art projects, including scratch-art portraits, will be offered in the outdoor courtyard of the library throughout the Family Open Studios Plus event.
The Family Open Studios program is generously funded by the Carlsbad Friends of the Arts. The Plus programs are made possible by the Carlsbad Library and Arts Foundation’s Robert H. Gartner Endowment Fund.
