Carlsbad Philanthropists Find Inspiration in MiraCosta College Theatre; Awarded for Generosity

Oceanside CA— At the Community Leaders Breakfast: Report to the Region held on October 17, 2014, the MiraCosta College Foundation presented the MiraCosta College Leadership Award to Carlsbad residents Bob and Elaine Algeo. The award recognizes their dedicated service and generous philanthropy to MiraCosta College and to the North County San Diego community.

“The Algeos are truly a couple of vision, integrity, service and accomplishment, having given their time, talent and support generously to the college, to the arts, and to the MiraCosta College Foundation,” said Linda Fogerson, executive director of the MiraCosta College Foundation and Development Office.

Since 2009, the Algeos have donated almost $56,000 toward numerous MiraCosta programs, including the Horticulture Food Garden Project, Theatre Arts, Friends of the Theatre, Spotlight Circle and the President’s Circle. The couple also gave one of the largest donations to the foundation’s Opportunity Scholarships campaign.

As regular theatre patrons with a passion for the arts, they have helped theatre students through scholarships and by donating funds so that students can attend national competitions. The MiraCosta College Theatre has also played a key role in their philanthropy. The couple says The Matchmaker, presented by the MiraCosta College Theatre Department in 2013, strengthened their motivation for giving.

“‘Money, pardon the expression, is like manure, it’s not worth a thing unless it’s spread around, encouraging young things to grow,’” said Elaine Algeo, quoting Dolly Levi, a character from the play. “That’s kind of like our motto, we want to be able to help young things grow and we really want to help support their education and future.”

This is the fourth year the MiraCosta College Foundation has given the award, which recognizes inspiring North San Diego County individuals and/or organizations demonstrating exemplary leadership and commitment to creating greater equity and opportunity for students enrolled at MiraCosta College.
