Oceanside CA— This morning, November 18, 2014, at 10:24 a.m. Oceanside Police officers responded to the 400 block of N. Tremont in response to a call regarding a found grenade. The officers arrived as the reporting party was carrying the ordnance out to them. Recognizing the item to possibly be a live piece of military ordnance, the officers told him to put it down and walk away from it.
The officers then cordoned off the area and began to evacuate. They evacuated an area roughly 300 feet in all directions from the ordnance. The Sheriff’s Explosive Ordnance Division responded and collected the item, which turned out to be a 40 mm grenade normally fired from an M19 launcher. When detonated, it has an effective kill radius of 2-3 meters.
It is not known at this time if the device is live or inert. Sheriff’s EOD will conduct tests to see. The evacuation order was lifted at 12:07 p.m.
