Student Arrested in Carlsbad for Social Media Posts that Shutdown Schools

Carlsbad CA— On Tuesday, January 6 at 5:10 p.m., the City of Carlsbad Police Department arrested a 15-year-old female Carlsbad High School student for a social media post that referenced a threat to Carlsbad High School.

The incident began on January 5 when the threatening social media post was reported to the Police Department.

Investigators worked around-the-clock and with the assistance of San Diego County law enforcement resources such as Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) the Police Department was able to back track the post to its originator.

On January 6, after further assistance provided by Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the Carlsbad Unified School District, officers arrested the 15-year-old female at her home for the criminal threats.

During the investigation, the Police Department found no indication that the student had either the means or the intent to follow through with the threat.

“We understand how distressing such incidents can be for everyone involved,” stated Carlsbad Police Investigations Lieutenant Pete Pascual. “The safety of our children is our top priority.” “We are grateful for the assistance of the many outside resources that helped us to the expedited resolution of this incident.”
