Escondido CA— The California Center for the Arts, Escondido (The Center) will team up with the Escondido Union School District, Escondido Arts Partnership and Escondido Alliance for the Arts to present a showcase of student art exhibitions and performances, arts activities and artist demonstrations on Saturday, March 7th from 10:00am – 2:00pm. The smART Festival is the culminating event of smART Fridays, which is an interactive arts program that brings teaching artists to local schools in Escondido. The program has grown since its establishment three years ago providing both visual and performing arts educational opportunities to students.
For the last five months, the smART Fridays program has brought community artists into local Escondido classrooms providing visual and performing art experiences to students. “It’s an amazing experience for students to work side-by-side with artists, and have the opportunity to share their creations during the smART Festival for the entire community to enjoy,” said Shannon Fralish, Project Specialist with the Escondido Union School District.
Several schools throughout Escondido have participated in these educational experiences. The students of Rose Elementary School spent an afternoon with local artist, Brenda Townsend, learning the
techniques and motions of traditional folk dance. Another local artist, Cathy Hamilton, showcased the artistic process of creating pottery at the Juniper, Bernardo, Conway, Rose and L.R. Green elementary schools.
The smART Fridays program will conclude with the smART Festival on Saturday, March 7th. The festival will showcase student art projects and performances that have been prepared during the Friday workshops. Students from the elementary schools of Bernardo, Central, Conway, Felicita, Glen View, Juniper, L.R. Green, North Broadway, Orange Glen, and Rose will have visual art displayed in the Center museum along with Rincon, Del Dios, and Bear Valley middle schools.
Music and dance groups will participate at three stage locations around the Center campus. These music and dance performers include the Del Dios Middle School show choir, the Center Children’s Chorus, Rincon Middle School band, Bear Valley Middle School band and Rose Elementary’s Ignite dance group. Rose, Farr, Juniper, Lincoln, and Conway elementary schools along with Mission, Del Dios, and Bear Valley middle schools will have students perform in choir, band and dance performances on stage.
In addition to the smART performances and art exhibitions, the event will celebrate the completion of the My Story program. Presented in partnership with the Center and the Escondido Union School District, My Story is an innovative, 16-week program where the Center offers curriculum that combines the arts with academic learning in order to provide enrichment opportunities to fourth and fifth-grade students. Fourth-graders practice various drama and theatre techniques to act out historical events, making the material more accessible and memorable. Fifth-graders use digital photography to create narratives and sharpen their language arts skills. The program culminates with a final exhibition of fifth-grade artwork in the Museum and fourth-grade theatrical productions in the Center Theater.
