May Concerts at MiraCosta College

Oceanside CA— MiraCosta College has an exciting lineup of concerts and events set for May. All concerts will be held on the Oceanside Campus, located  1 Barnard Drive.

  • Benny Golson Instrumental Jazz, Saturday, May 2 at 7:30 p.m. in the Concert Hall (Bldg. 2400). Admission is $20; students/seniors/staff, $15.
    • Legendary saxophonist and composer Benny Golson will perform with the MiraCosta Oceanside Jazz Orchestra (MOJO) and the MiraCosta Jazz Collective. Golson has performed alongside John Coltrane, Benny Goodman, Art Blakey and Dizzy Gillespie. He founded the historic Jazztet, and composed standards such as Killer Joe, I Remember Clifford, Blues March, and Whisper Not. Golson will also present a free master class earlier in the day.
  • Psalms, Hymns, & Spiritual Songs, Saturday, May 9 at 7:30 p.m. in the Concert Hall. Admission is $10; students/seniors/staff, $8.
    • For centuries, choral music has been an important vehicle for expression in a number of religious traditions. The MiraCosta Chamber Choir and Masterworks Chorale will perform works of historical significance and representative selections from varied faiths.
  • Applied Classical Recital, Tuesday, May 12 at 7:30 p.m. in the Concert Hall. Admission is $10; students/seniors/staff, $8.
    • Enjoy and evening recital of classical music featuring the best performances from pianists, singers and instrumentalists in the applied music program. Concert proceeds support student scholarships.
  • Jazz & Commercial Music Showcase, Wednesday, May 13, 7:30 p.m. in Studio A, Bldg. 2200. Admission is $10; students/seniors/staff, $8.
    • The first part of this concert showcases students in t he applied jazz & commercial music program. The second part features students and faculty sharing the stage for a jam session, one of the most interactive and authentic expressions of the jazz tradition. Concert proceeds support student scholarships.
  • Frequency Solo Night, Thursday, May 14 and Friday, May 15 at 7:30 p.m. in the Concert Hall. Admission is $10; students/seniors/staff, $8.
    • The final performances of the school year by the Frequency Vocal Jazz Ensemble will feature selected soloists and small groups performing contemporary and classic jazz repertoire, primarily arranged by the students in the ensemble. Matt Falker, director.
  • The MCCSO final concert of the season welcomes back the fabulous competition-winning pianist and local talent Nicholas King as featured soloist in a concert entitled, “A Salute to the Three B’s.” This concert will finish with King performing the great Concerto No. 1 in D minor by Johannes Brahms. Also featured will be Leonard Bernstein’s playful Overture to Candide and Alexander Borodin’s Polovitsian Dances from his opera Prince Igor. Branden Muresan, conductor.
