‘On Your Own Time’ Exhibit to Showcase City of Carlsbad Employee Artwork

Carlsbad CA— The City of Carlsbad’s Cultural Arts Office is hosting its eighth On Your Own Time: The National Arts Program at Carlsbad exhibition from May 28 through June 14 at the William D. Cannon Art Gallery, in the Carlsbad City Library complex located  1775 Dove Lane. The exhibition features artwork by City of Carlsbad employees and their families. Admission is free.

This year’s display includes 192 pieces of art submitted by 125 employees and family members. The styles of submissions range from photography to painting and sculpture. Cash prizes in five classifications will be awarded to participants for originality and creativity. The submissions are judged by an awards committee that includes local artist Betsy Schulz, who is creating the public art for the City of Carlsbad’s Fire Station #3; Skye Walker, the muralist who created the mural at the Boys & Girls Clubs of Carlsbad; and City of Carlsbad Arts Commissioner Joan Markovits.

Programs and events planned in conjunction with On Your Own Time include a free opening reception hosted by the Carlsbad Friends of the Arts on Wednesday, May 27 from 5 to 7 p.m. at the gallery and a free Family Open Studios on Saturday, June 6, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., in the gallery courtyard. Materials and workspace are provided for Family Open Studios and no reservations are required.

On You Own Time is sponsored by The National Arts Program Foundation of Malvern, Pennsylvania, in partnership with the City of Carlsbad. Since 1985, The National Arts Program has provided scholarships for continuing art education, certificates of participation, and cash awards to public employees and their family members who participate in this annual exhibition. The National Arts Program currently runs 78 programs, encompassing more than 400 cities and counties, in 43 states and the District of Columbia.

Operated by the City of Carlsbad’s Cultural Arts Office, the Cannon Art Gallery is a focal point for arts and culture in San Diego’s North County, offering a broad range of exhibitions, school and family programs, gallery tours, lectures and publications. The gallery is located at 1775 Dove Lane off El Camino Real and is open to the public Tuesday through Sunday. Admission is free. For information on gallery programs, contact the William D.
