Oceanside CA— Professional musicians and MiraCosta College instructors Steve Torok and Dan Siegel present an evening of high-energy jazz with a group of seasoned studio musicians during a special October 9 performance at the Oceanside Campus Concert Hall.
The Siegel/Torok Project in Concert is set for 7:30–9:30 p.m.
“It’s going to be a great show with some incredible musicians,” Siegel said.
Siegel started performing professionally as lead singer and guitarist in a rock band at age 12. Now he’s known as a “quiet giant” in the music industry with his 20th solo album, Indigo, released in spring 2013. Siegel released his first album in 1979 and his second album, The Hot Shot (1981), reached No.1 on the Radio & Records Jazz Chart and remained in Billboard’s Top 10-selling jazz albums for 10 weeks. Since then, he has performed his Top 10 recordings around the world and has published nearly 400 musical compositions. Siegel has recorded and performed with a variety of artists including Glenn Frey (The Eagles), Chaka Khan, Berlin, Philip Bailey (Earth Wind & Fire) and the London Symphony Orchestra.
Torok also has performed with some of America’s most renowned artists, including Stevie Wonder, Usher, The Temptations, The Four Tops, Sheila E, Barry Manilow, Mary Wilson of the Supremes, and Taj Mahal. His saxophone playing and arrangements have been featured on numerous national recordings and the hit TV shows The Voice and American Idol. His arrangements have been performed by artists such as saxophonists Ernie Watts, Tom Scott and Kenny G. Torok chairs the Music Department at MiraCosta College, where he also teaches saxophone, improvisation and music theory, and directs both the MiraCosta Oceanside Jazz Orchestra (MOJO) and the Jazz Collective.
His latest CD, Eye to Eye, includes a few jazzed up Star Wars tunes that are getting plenty of air time on San Diego jazz station KSDS.
Joining Siegel and Torok will be musicians Land Richards (drums), Allen Hinds (guitar) and Alex Al (bass).
“The band we’re bringing in is pretty stellar,” Torok said. “Everybody has recorded albums in their own right. They’re all accomplished musicians, and this kind of group doesn’t perform in North County very often.”
General admission tickets for the concert are $10 each, and $8 for students, seniors and staff. Students and members of the community are invited to a free 3 p.m. discussion and question-and-answer session with the musicians that also will be held in the Concert Hall. “It’s a great opportunity for our students and for the community,” Torok said.
Siegel agreed. “This event is reflective of what we have going on in the Music Department at MiraCosta College,” he said. “There’s really nothing like the program we have here on the community-college level.”
The MiraCosta College Concert Hall is located 1 Barnard Drive in Oceanside.
