MiraCosta College Theatre Presents ‘Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike’

Oceanside CA— MiraCosta College Theatre Department presents the comedy, “Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike,” a witty and incisive new farce for our modern, hyper-connected world. The play opens November 13 at the MiraCosta College Theatre, located 1 Barnard Drive, Oceanside. Eric Bishop will direct.

Award-winning playwright Christopher Durang turns Chekhov on his head in this tale of life in bucolic Bucks County, PA, where Vanya and Sonia have frittered their lives away in their family’s farmhouse full of regret, angst and the alarmingly ambiguous prophecies of their addled housecleaner Cassandra. Enter their sister, self-absorbed movie star Masha, with her prized boy-toy Spike, and the stage is set for an absurd weekend of general hilarity and global warming. The Broadway sensation of 2013, “Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike” delights audiences with its abundant comic twists while paying loving homage to Chekhov’s classic themes of loss and longing.

“We are thrilled to get the rights to such a new play right off of Broadway. This hilarious Christopher Durang comedy won the Tony Award for “Best Play” in 2013,” said Bishop. “This will be only the second production done in San Diego County after The Old Globe last year.

“Durang has such a great ear for writing really smart, witty comic dialogue. His characters are rich, complex and nutty! I’m thrilled with the talented cast we have assembled. We are also fortunate to have three student designers in the areas of set, costume and makeup designs. I hope MiraCostans from all walks of life come to see this one!”

The cast stars Kyle Dowdy as Vanya, Brianna Russavage as Sonia, Rosie Gordon as Masha, Jonah Duhe as Spike, Lily Thaisz as Nina, and Emily Neifert as Cassandra.

Play dates are scheduled for November 13, 14, 19, 20 and 21 at 7:30 p.m. and November 15, 21 and 22 at 2 p.m. General admission is $16; seniors/staff, $13; students, $11.
