New Seasons of ‘This Is Jazz!’ and Opera Previews in Carlsbad

City of Carlsbad Cultural Arts Office launches new seasons, new location.

Carlsbad CA— Two of the City of Carlsbad Cultural Arts Office’s popular programs, This Is Jazz! and Opera Previews, will temporarily move to the Carlsbad Senior Center, located  799 Pine Ave., beginning in February. Seating for the programs is limited and first come, first served. Admission is free.

This Is Jazz! and Opera Previews usual home at Carlsbad City Library on Dove Lane will undergo renovations in early 2016. The programs will return to Carlsbad City Library’s Ruby G. Schulman Auditorium when the library reopens in mid-2016. As part of the library’s renovations, the auditorium will be enhanced with new seating and theatrical lighting, improved accessibility and upgraded presentation technology for an improved viewing experience.

This Is Jazz!

A four-part lecture and performance series, This Is Jazz! covers an array of subjects on American jazz with live demonstrations by musical guests and discussions between artists and the audience. The 2016 series connects on-air hosts from San Diego’s award-winning radio station, KSDS Jazz 88.3, and This Is Jazz! curator Claudia Russell together with some of Southern California’s finest musicians.

The series takes place one Saturday per month at 4 p.m. Tickets are distributed at 3 p.m., and doors open at 3:45 p.m.

Feb. 13

The Saucy Side of Jazz

Featuring guitarist Robin Henkel and vocalist Whitney Shay

Robin Henkel is a San Diego blues and jazz musician who has performed with artists such as John Hammond, the San Diego Symphony, Sha Na Na and Dirty Dozen Brass Band. Whitney Shay is a versatile performer, and you can find her singing anything from jazz with her own quartet to fronting a 13-piece big band.

March 12

Dance is Music

Featuring Besos de Coco in celebration of Women’s History Month

Besos de Coco, an innovative chamber group, is stirring up a great deal of excitement with their performances throughout Southern California. Tap dancer Claudia Gomez Vorce, double bassist Evona Wascinski and classical guitarist/vocalist Lorraine Castellanos perform passionate renditions of art music.

Why Miles?

Featuring drummer Barry Farrar Jr. and the Jazz 88.3 All-Stars in celebration of Jazz Appreciation Month

Barry Farrar Jr. is a native San Diegan that keeps one foot in the blues with his band Blue Rockit and another in jazz with the Jazz 88.3 All-Stars. The Jazz 88.3 All-Stars play straight ahead jazz by professional

San Diego-based musicians.

May 7

Jazz in Service

Featuring saxophonist Charlie Arbelaez

Saxophonist Charlie Arbelaez resides in San Diego after honorably serving his country for four years in the United States Marine Corps. Jazz in Service explores and celebrates the role of jazz in military bands and the role military bands have played in jazz history.

Opera Previews

Opera Previews features photos, videos and recordings to enhance musicologist Dr. Ron Shaheen’s lighthearted, jargon-free insights on the music, history, fabled performances and special attributes of San Diego Opera productions. Opera Previews are scheduled prior to opening night of the San Diego Opera performance.

The series takes place one Saturday per month at 10 a.m. Tickets are distributed at 9:15 a.m., and doors open at 9:45 a.m.
