18-Year-old Pedestrian Struck and Killed in Escondido-UPDATED

Escondido CA— Saturday night, February 6, 2016 at about 8:50 pm, officers from the Escondido Police Department were dispatched to the area of San Pasqual Valley Road and Oakhill Drive regarding an injured person in the roadway. Officers arrived at 8:52 PM and determined a vehicle had struck pedestrian. The 18-year-old male pedestrian sustained major injuries to the head. Officers attempted lifesaving measures however the subject died at the scene.

Based on the driver’s statements and evidence at the scene it appears the following occurred. A gold 2008 Toyota Corolla was being driven by 86-year-old Ruth Waldsmith, an Escondido resident. Waldsmith was traveling north on San Pasqual Valley Road south of Oakhill Drive when she collided with the pedestrian. Waldsmith was not injured and remained at the scene. The name of the pedestrian is not being released until next of kin are notified. Alcohol does not appear to be a factor in this collision.

The cause of this collision is still under investigation. The investigation is ongoing and is being conducted by Officer Tyler Songer of the Traffic Division. Anyone with information on this case is encouraged to call Officer Songer at (760) 839-4454
