Soils from Washington to Baja Take Center Stage at Tour de Terroir

The Wine Pub explores environmental factors on West Coast wines

San Diego CA— Different wines aren’t only different grapes. A vineyard’s terrain, soil, climate and more, known as the “terroir,” all contribute to the flavor. On Saturday, June 11, The Wine Pub holds its first-ever Tour de Terroir, a tasting event where guests try ten wines from five different regions, each exhibiting a cup of soil from the vineyard and a terroir story told by local experts.

From 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., The Wine Pub’s patio will transform into a one-stop West Coast adventure through the terroirs of five different regions– Washington, Oregon, Northern California, Southern California and Baja, Mexico. Each expert will explain to a patio full of guests the connection between the soil, the larger terroir, and the experience of drinking each wine.

“When you recognize how many different terroirs exist on the West Coast, you foster a deeper appreciation for different wines, different vineyards and different climates,” says The Wine Pub Owner Sandy Hanshaw. “We hope to help guests piece together why Rhone varietals grow best in the Central Coast of California and why big, bold reds thrive in Eastern Washington. Above all, we want guests to continue to understand just how much we need to take care of our environment to keep enjoying the things we love.”

Terroir, a French word meaning “land,” is the set of environmental factors that affect crop qualities. For vineyards, the local terroir is an unchangeable factor that remains critical in cultivating distinct wines that speak to their place of origin.
