Two People Laying on Tracks Struck by COASTER Train in Encinitas

Encinitas CA— This afternoon,  July 1, 2016, at approximately 3:15, deputies from the North Coastal Sheriff’s Station and deputies from the Sheriff’s Transit Enforcement Unit responded to a Coaster Train vs. pedestrian collision on the railroad tracks at milepost marker 238.5, which is located just south of the Encinitas Transit Center, near S. Coast Highway 101 and K Street, Encinitas.

A southbound Coaster Train was traveling at approximately 50 miles per hour when the engineer observed two pedestrians lying on the railroad tracks. The Coaster Train immediately applied the emergency braking system and activated the warning horn, but the pedestrians did not move.

The train was unable to stop and collided into the pedestrians. The pedestrians were transported from the scene to the hospital for more comprehensive medical attention.

The Sheriff’s Transit Enforcement Unit will be handling the investigation.
