New Machine Shop MakerSpace Offers Shop Space for Public Use

Carlsbad CA—This fall, MiraCosta College’s Technology Career Institute is opening its Machinist Technology lab spaces to the public. Every Tuesday and Thursday, August 23 through December 20, between the hours of 11:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m., the full machine shop and computer lab are available for the hobbyist to create something from metal using the lab’s manual mill or lathe, or perhaps laser engrave a gift for a friend, or 3D print something created in SolidWorks.

NOTE: There will be requirements in regard to safety and proof of ability to use certain equipment. In addition, users are required to bring in their own materials.

For a low fee, users may come in and use lab equipment. Walk-in lab fees:

  • 1 session = $5
  • 10 sessions = $45
  • 20 sessions = $80
  • 34 sessions (all available dates) = $125

For those with a working knowledge, but needing additional training, the college offers short workshops at $25 a class.

    • MS Office 2016

The following equipment is available (students must sign-up for equipment and/or to sign-out any tools):

    • Grinder
    • Manual Mill

  • Prototrack Mill
  • CNC Mill
    • CNC Lathe
  • 3D Printer
    • Laser Engraver
  • Soldering tools
