El Camino vs Oceanside Varsity Basketball on KOCT

Oceanside CA— Friday night in Oceanside just got even better for basketball fans. The Oceanside Unified School District (OUSD) and KOCT have partnered to air the boys’ and girls’ varsity basketball games between hometown rivals Oceanside High School (OHS) and El Camino High School (ECHS). The games will be aired live from Oceanside High School on Friday, Feb. 17 starting at 5:30 p.m.

At their regular meeting on Oct. 11, the OUSD Board of Education voted to bring back the broadcasting of Oceanside sports to local television. On Nov. 4, 2016, KOCT aired the OHS vs ECHS varsity football game live from El Camino High School.

“I am so pleased to see the long standing tradition of Oceanside sports on our local airwaves,” said OUSD Board of Education President Robert “Camo” Gleisberg. “Our kids are shining examples of excellence in education and in sports. The broadcasting of these games will allow fans, near and far, to support our kids.”

From 1990 to 2008, KOCT broadcasted OUSD sports on its airwaves. The partnership was discontinued due to funding priorities. The cost of the broadcasting is being funded by public donations.

“We are very excited to partner with OUSD to bring back the wonderful tradition of high school sports on television,” said Tom Reeser, executive director of KOCT. “The airing of these games will help instill even more pride in our city and our Oceanside schools.”

Announcers Art Root and Kenneth Wright will call the on-court action. Wright is an assistant principal at Oceanside High School and a graduate of El Camino High School.

For fans unable to make Friday’s game at Oceanside High School, the match up will air live on KOCT as well as on www.KOCT.ORG starting at 5:30 p.m. The games will be replayed back-to-back on Saturday, Feb. 18 at 7 p.m. and Sunday, Feb. 19 at 7:30 p.m. on Channel 18.

KOCT will replay the games throughout the month of February on Channels 18 and 19 Cox Cable in the City of Oceanside and county-wide on AT&T’s U-Verse Service, Channel 99.
