Oceanside CA— For the third year in a row, the MiraCosta Music Program has been honored by the nation’s premier jazz magazine, DownBeat, in its 40th Annual Student Music Awards. For the first time the music department received three awards in a single year: MOJO was named the Large Jazz Ensemble Winner among all community college band entrants, the Jazz Collective received an award for Outstanding Small Jazz Combo Performance, and student guitarist Arek Gralnic received an individual award for Outstanding Jazz Soloist.
“DownBeat is a respected international publication and I could not be more thrilled! The awards not only validate the quality of the jazz and commercial music education we offer, but also help to distinguish our students from the pack as they seek transfer and professional opportunities,” said MiraCosta College music instructor, Steve Torok, who serves as the director of the Jazz Collective and MOJO.
DownBeat magazine was first published in 1934 and is the most prominent jazz publication in the world. Every year the magazine selects the best student bands from around the country in a number of divisions. The bands submit recordings, which are then evaluated by a panel of internationally celebrated jazz performers and educators. The recordings are anonymous and ranked by the panel based solely on musicality.
