Deadline Approaches for Electric Vehicle Drivers to Cash In

EV drivers must register by May 31 for SDG&E bill credit

San Diego County CA— Thousands of electric vehicle (EV) owners have already registered to receive a credit on their SDG&E bill but many more are eligible.  There are 24,000 EV drivers in our region who have the opportunity to enroll in the Electric Vehicle Climate Credit program and receive a credit of at least $50 or more on their SDG&E residential bill.

The program is part of a statewide greenhouse gas reduction effort administered by the California Air Resources Board (CARB).

Those who drive an all-electric vehicle or a plug-in hybrid EV and live in the SDG&E service territory are eligible to participate in this program. EV drivers have until May 31 to sign up at www.sdge.com/evcc. Customers will need their SDG&E account number and DMV registration card to sign up. A bill credit will be applied this summer. The amount of the credit will be based on the number of people who have applied.

“We encourage all EV owners to participate in this annual program to increase adoption of clean-fuel vehicles and help clean the air,” said John Sowers, SDG&E Senior Vice President of Asset Management who oversees clean transportation. “The transportation sector produces approximately half of all harmful air emissions in our region. With more than 40 percent of SDG&E’s energy generated from renewable resources, each mile driven using electricity from the local power grid reduces the region’s carbon footprint.”

Each year the Electric Vehicle Climate Credit will apply to current EV drivers. This means that if an EV changes ownership or leasing status, the new owner will be able sign up for the bill credit.

This annual CARB program is funded through the sale of low carbon fuel credits and not through utility rates. It is available to EVs in SDG&E’s territory that are registered to residents, and not commercial fleets.
