MiraCosta College Students Plugged into Bachelor’s Degrees in Computer Information Technology

Oceanside CA— Beginning in spring 2018, students can earn a four-year degree in Computer Information Technology at the MiraCosta College campus.

The 2+2 program is part of an ongoing partnership with Point Loma Nazarene University (PLNU) to offer bachelor’s degrees in nursing, business administration, child development and now computer information technology.

“Earning degrees and certificates are directly linked to securing high wage, high demand jobs. We are very pleased to offer another opportunity for our students to obtain a bachelor’s degree at MiraCosta College,” said Steve Isachsen, CSIT department chair at MiraCosta.

The 2+2 program is offered as part of a memorandum of understanding approved by the MiraCosta College Board of Trustees last year. Upper division courses will be taught online and in the classroom by Point Loma Nazarene University professors. Point Loma Nazarene will also have a counselor at MiraCosta College to guide current and prospective students on earning their four-year degree.

The new degree program is the result of MiraCosta computer studies and information technology faculty members Steve Isachsen and Rick Cassoni working closely with Point Loma faculty to ensure that the MiraCosta classes count toward the first two years of the Point Loma Nazarene degree. Rick Cassoni, CSIT faculty, explains that, “this specific degree is not offered at local CSUs and fills a gap between traditional management information systems and computer science degrees.”

“Students will earn their remaining units toward their computer information technology degrees at PLNU for about half the tuition of a traditional PLNU students,” said Al Taccone, dean of career education.

For more information on the bachelor’s program in computer information technology, the public is invited to attend an informational session held at 5 p.m., Monday, September 18, in Aztlan A/B on MiraCosta’s Oceanside campus, 1 Barnard Drive, Oceanside
