Oceanside CA— The MiraCosta College Theatre Department presents Waiting for Lefty written by Clifford Odets. The play opens September 29 at the MiraCosta College Theatre, located at 1 Barnard Drive, Oceanside. Eric Bishop will direct.
Waiting for Lefty is one of the most celebrated and significant plays of the modern American theatre. Set in the Depression Era and dealing with the cynical exploitation of the working classes, the play, which was first presented by the famous Group Theatre, became both a symbol of its times and a beacon for many soon-to-be-famous playwrights who came under its influence.
“Playwright Clifford Odets accurately captures the language of the 1930s working class. His words sizzle and crackle like fire,” said Director Bishop. “Audiences will hear things from this 80-year-old play that will draw familiar, sometimes eerie, parallels to the issues of today.”
Unique to this performance is the seating and placement of the audience members. “I am really excited for the way that we are doing this production. This is the first time MiraCosta is doing a show in the round, so the stage is in the center and the audience members sit around the stage. I am really excited to have that intimate experience with that stage” explains cast member Lisa Naudi.
Play dates are scheduled for September 29, 30 and October 5, 6, and 7 at 7:30 p.m. and October 1, 7 and 8 at 2 p.m. General admission is $16; seniors/staff, $13; students, $11. A preview performance is scheduled for September 28 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets for the preview performance are $11 for all seats. Children under the age of 5 are not admitted to the theatre. Due to the seating configuration of this production, seating is limited and not reserved.
