The Alemian File: How to Find a Good Insurance Agent

By David Alemian

Finding a good insurance agent is key to finding the best insurance policy for you. It’s not that difficult if you follow two basic rules of thumb.

  1. Choose an insurance agent who specializes in the type of insurance you wish to buy. Avoid the agent who sells a little of this and a little of that. Remember the old adage… A jack of all trades, and master of none. In the world of insurance, this is especially true because there is so much to know about each type of insurance. An agent who sells a little bit of everything might be good at some types of insurance, but is definitely not good at all types of insurance. Ask the agent what types of insurance he or she sells. If the agent then rattles off a huge list of what they “specialize” in you know it’s time to look elsewhere. In other words, getting your homeowner’s and auto insurance from the same agent is okay, but get your life insurance elsewhere. Life insurance is a specialty area because of its many uses and many different types. Moreover, there are many different carriers, and it takes an agent who specializes in this area to know which carriers to recommend for each situation. When it comes to health insurance, go to someone whose specialty is only health insurance. Health insurance changes so fast and so often that it takes someone who specializes in only health insurance to keep up with it.
  1. Choose an independent agent who represents multiple companies and avoid the captive agents who represent only one company. Insurance is not a one size fits all product. The independent agent who represents multiple companies is in a better position to find the right product to suit your needs. Yes, some companies offer discounts if you bundle their products like home, auto, and life. But is that bundle really a good deal? You just might discover that you are better off, with better benefits and lower rates, if you buy your home and auto in one place, and your life insurance somewhere else?

Remember, whatever insurance you buy, you will be paying the premiums for a long time, which makes it worthwhile it to follow these simple guidelines.

If you need a good independent life insurance agent, check out www.LowestQuoteLife.com. It’s an independent agency that represents about 80% of the life insurance carriers, and is one of the best places to look.
