Oceanside CA—At a special meeting on April 16, the Oceanside Unified School District (OUSD) Board of Education appointed Reginald “Reggie” Thompkins as acting superintendent for the district.
Thompkins has been the deputy superintendent for OUSD since 2016 and directly oversees district departments including Curriculum and Instruction, Assessment, Special Education, Educational Support Services, and school site principals.
“Mr. Thompkins’ leadership and experience, both inside the district and outside the district, will continue to help move our kids and district forward,” said Board of Education President Ann Corwin. “He impacts our kids learning, our communication with our families, and our relationships with teachers and staff and will continue to do so as the acting superintendent.”
Thompkins has more than 25-years experience in education including serving as a classroom teacher, assistant principal, principal, and basketball coach. He served as the administrative director, instructional support division at the Corona-Norco Unified School District where he oversaw all K-12 principals and counselors and served as a member of district leadership team.
“I am honored that the board has such faith in me,” said Thompkins. “I am humbled every day by the students of our district and will work tirelessly to ensure they are ready for college, career, and life.”
Thompkins was selected as acting superintendent by a 4 to 1 vote of the board. Thompkins’ appointment began immediately and his salary will remain the same.
OUSD is currently in the process of searching for a permanent superintendent. Thompkins will be replacing Dr. Duane Coleman, who is currently out on personal leave and will retire as of June 30.
