Oceanside Firefighter Attacked by Knife Wielding Suspect During Search of Smoke Filled Residence

Oceanside CA— Oceanside Fire Department units responded to a reported structure fire at 10:58pm, July 5, 2018, on Strawberry Place, in Oceanside, CA.

The first engine arrived approximately eight minutes after dispatch and found light smoke coming from the side of a single family home. The crews made access to the home and found it clear and were looking for the source of smoke. Oceanside Police Department officers outside informed Oceanside Fire Department personnel that they saw someone run back inside the house and they had reports of a victim.

Fire Department personnel continued to search the home and a firefighter went back to a bedroom he had already cleared when a suspect jumped out at him wielding a large knife. The suspect took a swing at the firefighter. The firefighter pushed the suspect up against the wall until OPD officers and a K-9 arrived and took the suspect into custody. The firefighter was not hurt.

The source of the smoke was soon found to be coming from the stove. The suspect had placed a laptop on the range and it was burning and smoking. No other fire source was located.

The residence was ventilated and turned over to OPD for investigation.

No firefighters were injured and one OPD officer was treated and released on scene for minor smoke inhalation. OPD had the suspect in custody when OFD units cleared the scene roughly 90 minutes after initial dispatch.

The Carlsbad And Vista Fire Departments provided mutual aid on the incident.
