San Diego CA— Southwest Strategies, one of California’s leading public affairs and public outreach firms, is pleased to announce the addition of four new employees to its growing team in the San Diego office– Manager of Public Affairs, Patrick Batten; Senior Account Executive, Natalia Mendez; Senior Account Executive, Timothy Howland; and Account Executive Ashley Brill.
“Patrick brings many years of experience and leadership to our already accomplished team. His leadership in the Marine Corps, understanding of legislative processes and strong political insight will help support our clients on many complex issues,” said Chris Wahl, the company’s president. “Our clients will benefit from his strategic analysis and problem solving skills.”
In his new role, Batten will help guide land use clients throughout Southern California to complex entitlement approvals. Prior to joining Southwest Strategies, Batten worked with energy companies, environmental coalitions and public agencies to develop strategic partnerships and find creative solutions, most recently supporting development projects in the inland Empire.
Mendez brings a fresh perspective on community outreach and strategic messaging to the Southwest team, having come from a background in large scale event production. Prior to joining Southwest Strategies, Mendez served as the Community Relations Manager for the Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon Series, an internationally recognized event producer that oversees more than 30 races a year. Mendez served as the public facing liaison, working with local government agencies, local elected officials, and community and business organizations nationwide.
“Natalia’s unique background and deep knowledge of community outreach will help Southwest Strategies continue to lead the industry in strategic community relations planning. Her experience communicating to a wide variety of audiences and localities make her a strong addition to our team,” said Vice President Ben Boyce.
Howland is an experienced digital media strategist and government advocacy specialist. He brings a wealth of federal and state outreach experience to the Southwest Strategies team from his 8 years of success in Washington, D.C.

Previously, Howland led his own digital consulting firm and served as the Lead Product Developer for National Taxpayers Union (NTU) and Foundation. In this role, he worked as a data analyst, project manager and content creator for digital advocacy objectives.
Brill comes to Southwest Strategies with a background in commercial real estate and new business development. She worked previously at a commercial development firm, where she supported the land acquisition and development team on multifamily mixed-use projects.
