New MS Prevalence Number Inspires Southern Californians to Join Walk MS

Thousands Expected at San Diego County Credit Union Walk MS: San Diego on April 13 Because Twice as Many Need a Cure

San Diego CAAn estimated 2,500 people are expected to raise more than $315,000 at San Diego County Credit Union Walk MS: San Diego on Saturday, April 13 at NTC Park at Liberty Station. This year, people are inspired by a new study conducted by the National Multiple Sclerosis Society and published in the February 15, 2019, online issue of Neurology®, the medical journal of the American Academy of Neurology, which shows more than twice as many people in the U.S. are living with multiple sclerosis than previously thought. The previous studies estimated the prevalence to be 400,000, but this new study shows that number is closer to 1 million.

“Twice as many people need a cure and to know they have a community to support them,” said Cyndi Zagieboylo, President and CEO of the National MS Society. “Nobody should face MS alone, which is why Walk MS is so powerful as the gathering place for the MS movement. Funds raised at Walk MS support programs and services for people affected by MS, ensure legislative decision-makers understand the challenges of MS and public policy needed so that people can live their best lives, as well as fund global, cutting-edge research so we can get another step closer to finding a cure.”

Each dollar raised is one step closer to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society’s goal – a world free of MS. With nearly 300,000 people fundraising and volunteering nationwide each year, Walk MS has generated more than $1 billion since its inception in 1988.

Novartis and Sanofi Genzyme are the premier national sponsors of Walk MS. Biogen, Celgene, EMD Serono and Genentech are national sponsors. Local sponsors include Title sponsor San Diego County Credit Union, as well as Gold sponsors Sycuan Casino Resort and NBC7.

The National MS Society is hosting another Walk MS event in the month of April. The San Diego County Credit Union Walk MS: Carlsbad will be held on Sunday, April 28, which will begin on Armada Drive, overlooking the flower fields. Together it’s estimated that these walks will raise nearly half a million dollars for MS.

About Multiple Sclerosis

Multiple sclerosis is an unpredictable, often disabling disease of the central nervous system that disrupts the flow of information within the brain, and between the brain and body. Symptoms range from numbness and tingling to blindness and paralysis. The progress, severity and specific symptoms of MS in any one person cannot yet be predicted, but advances in research and treatment are leading to better understanding and moving us closer to a world free of MS. Most people with MS are diagnosed between the ages of 20 and 50, with at least two to three times more women than men being diagnosed with the disease. MS affects more than 2.3 million worldwide.
