Pala CA— Pala Casino Spa & Resort’s upcoming sizzling summer of entertainment will continue with its Latin Legends show, which will bring together four incredible and historic bands in one amazing show. Latin Legends will feature LA bands El Chicano, Tierra, and Thee Midniters, along with the San Francisco-based band Malo, sharing the outdoor stage at Pala’s Starlight Theater. Each band in itself provides an evening of great music and nostalgic hits. Combined together, the Latin Legends concert will capture the spirit, culture and rock/funk/salsa fusion that defined “Chicano Rock” in the late 60’s -70’s.
About El Chicano
El Chicano grew out of the burgeoning Latino music scene developing from the streets of East Los Angeles. Originally known as “The VIP’s” and founded by Freddie Sanchez, El Chicano is the most successful of the L.A. Latino Rock recording artists. Their 10 album run from 1970 – 1985 is unrivalled and included classic albums such as Viva Tirado, Revolución, Celebration, El Chicano and Cinco all released thru MCA Records.
Their 1970 debut album “Viva Tirado” included a cover of a big-band composition by Maestro Gerald Wilson, was their big crossover jazz/rock/fusion smash hit “Viva Tirado” (a tribute to Mexican bullfighter, José Ramon Tirado) was also significant as it allowed El Chicano the unique distinction of charting simultaneously in all music genre categories and earned the group their first Gold Record in 1970 To top off a fabulous inaugural year for the band, El Chicano was voted by Billboard and Cashbox publications as the number one Jazz group of 1970. In 1973 the self-titled LP “El Chicano” had another top #40 hit “Tell Her She’s Lovely” that also went Gold for the group. Over a 40 year span, the Group has earned 5 Gold records. El Chicano has recorded twelve albums and has had their songs included in over 100 compilation releases. Their music has also been used on several major movie soundtracks as well as television appearances and participation in numerous documentaries.
Tierra, the band named “Best R&B Vocal Group” by four leading magazines including Billboard. They started their career in East Los Angeles with a blend of rock, pop, jazz, R&B and salsa. The result was a Latin R&B rhythm which produced classics like “Together”, “Gonna Find Her”, “Memories” and “Zoot Suit Boogie”. Founded in 1972, the band has performed internationally and continues to perform with their unique smooth and soulful sounds. Throughout Terra’s history, Rudy Salas has been, and continues to be the leader of the band, record producer, and head of business affairs for Tierra. Tierra was the first Latino band to have four songs on the national chart and two simultaneously in the Top 100. They have performed in such prestigious shows such as Carnegie Hall, The American Music Awards, American Bandstand, and The Dorothy Chandler Pavilion. Tierra is widely known to have played a role in opening doors for other Latino and non-Latino superstars of today, including comedian Paul Rodriguez, Arsenio Hall, Sheila E., Gloria Estefan, Los Lobos, Latino Comic of the Year, Rudy Moreno, and more.
Latin rock band Malo were formed in San Francisco by ex-members of the Malibus and Naked Lunch. Led by vocalist Arcelio Garcia and guitarist Jorge Santana (brother of Carlos Santana), the band signed to Warner Bros. in 1971 and recorded its debut with David Rubinson, producer of fellow California-based acts the Chambers Brothers and Moby Grape, and a future close associate of Herbie Hancock. The album, self-titled, was released in early 1972 and was successful due to “Suavecito,” a mellow romantic groove written by members Richard Bean, Pablo Tellez, and Abel Zarate that peaked at number 18 on the Billboard Hot 100. It became a low-rider classic. Dos, released later in 1972, and Evolution, released in 1973, were also produced by Rubinson and appealed to listeners who appreciated bold fusions of soul, rock, jazz, and Latin music. Ascención, the final release of the band’s first phase, followed in 1974.
Six albums were released on as many labels during the 1980s, 1990s, and 2000s. Meanwhile, “Suavecito” remained alive, included on numerous compilations and referenced in Sugar Ray‘s Top Five pop hit “Every Morning.” Additionally, Rhino Handmade released ¡Celebración!: The Warner Bros. Recordings — a four-CD box set that included all four Warner albums and single versions.
About Thee Midniters
Thee Midniters are a 1960s band from East Los Angeles influenced by “surf music to rhythm and blues to Mexican music,” embodying a Chicano identity, a “mixture of Mexican heritage but living in America.” The band was one of the first to integrate horns, an unusual combination of trombone and sax, congas, keyboards and electric guitars to produce a sound similar to better known bands popular in the late 1960s such as Chicago and Blood, Sweat & Tears. Indisputably the greatest Latino rock band of the ’60s, Thee Midniters took their inspiration from both the British Invasion sound of the Rolling Stones and the more traditional R&B that they were weaned on in their native Los Angeles. Hugely popular in East Los Angeles, the group, featuring both guitars and horns, had a hit with their storming version of “Land of a Thousand Dances” in 1965. Much of their repertoire features driving, slightly punkish rock/R&B, along with up-tempo numbers and smoldering romantic soul tunes. Their legacy is felt in popular, modern day L.A. Latino rock acts including Los Lobos. Their most popular hits include “Land of a Thousand Dances”, “That’s All”, “Everybody Needs Somebody to Love” and “Whittier Blvd.”.
