kitchen Fire Extinguished by Off-Duty Firefighter in Oceanside

Oceanside CA— At approximately 4:20 this afternoon, September 20, 2019, Oceanside Fire Department units responded to a reported residential structure fire in the 1600 block of Lopez Street in South Oceanside just after 4 pm this afternoon. The first arriving engine found a small single story, single story residence. The residents were in the front yard stating an off-duty firefighter had entered the home with a hose and extinguished a well-involved stove fire that had spread to the appliances and cabinets above the stove.

Crews rapidly entered the house to find residual smoke and heat requiring them to access the spaces in the ceiling and wall to check for extension. This allowed fire personnel to clear the structure in approximately nine minutes. Units remained on scene for an additional thirty minutes to overhaul the site and stabilize the customer.

One resident had complaints of a cough, however, no injuries to fire personnel or civilians occurred on this incident.

The cause of the fire was deemed a cooking fire.
