Fleet Week Festivities Kick Off with Military-First Responder Softball Tournament

San Diego CA— Public ship tours and other Fleet Week San Diego activities may not be in full swing until this weekend, but there will be swinging of another sort starting this Monday when the San Diego Fleet Week Foundation hosts the opening of a first-ever softball tournament.   The tournament pits teams from local military units and first responder agencies against one another in friendly competition to highlight the bond that exists between the men and women who serve San Diego and all of America.

“This tournament is a great way to start off a weeklong celebration of the sea services here in San Diego,” said 2019 Fleet Week San Diego Board President Gordon Rutherford.  “Like our military service members, our first responders here in San Diego play a critical role in the community.  Bringing these two groups together for a little recreation and down time honors the sacrifices and commitment they have for our community here in San Diego.”

About Fleet Week San Diego

Fleet Week San Diego is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit foundation created by community and business leaders to honor and celebrate the men and women of the military through public events and alliances that support and thank these heroes.  The Chamber of Commerce gave birth to Fleet Week San Diego in 1997 and by 2001 the event had grown into a nonprofit California Public Benefit Corporation. By expressing its support for the contributions made by the naval services to the many communities of the greater San Diego region, Fleet Week San Diego helps to maintain the vision of San Diego as a patriotic, pro-military city.
