Together on Stage: Mary Chapin Carpenter and Shawn Colvin at the California Center for the Arts- December 5

Escondido CA— Folk artists Mary Chapin Carpenter and Shawn Colvin take the stage together at the California Center for the Arts, Escondido on Thursday, December 5, 2019 at 7:30pm in the Concert Hall.

Mary Chapin Carpenter began her career as a folk-influenced performer in the Washington, D.C. area, but found favor on country radio in the ’80s and ’90s, taking her emotionally intelligent songs to a mass audience.

Beginning with 1987’s Hometown Girl, she wrote and sang in the contemporary singer/songwriter vein, but moved into more country-leaning material with 1990’s Shooting Straight in the Dark, which included the hit single, “Down at the Twist and Shout.”

Released in 1992, Come On Come On was a commercial breakthrough, selling over two million copies on the strength of the singles “I Feel Lucky” and “Passionate Kisses.”

With 2001’s Time* Sex* Love*, Carpenter gradually began to step away from commercial country, returning to her roots in contemporary folk and exploring more personal themes on 2007’s The Calling and 2016’s The Things That We Are Made Of, that registered with her most loyal fans.

In an era when female singer-songwriters are ever more ubiquitous, Shawn Colvin stands out as a singular and enduring talent. Her songs are slow-release works of craft and catharsis that become treasured, lifetime companions for their listeners.

As a storyteller, Colvin is both keen and warm-hearted, leavening even the toughest tales with tenderness, empathy, and a searing sense of humor.

In the nearly 30 years since the release of her debut album, Colvin has won three GRAMMY Awards, released twelve albums, written a critically acclaimed memoir, maintained a non-stop national and international touring schedule, appeared on countless television and radio programs, had her songs featured in major motion pictures and created a remarkable canon of work.
