La Jolla Symphony and Chorus Announces the Appointment of Dr. Arian Khaefi, as Interim Chorus Conductor

Ruben Valenzuela Steps Down

La Jolla CA— The La Jolla Symphony & Chorus (LJS&C) is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Arian Khaefi, Director of Choral Studies at San Diego State University, to serve as Interim Chorus Conductor of the LJS&C chorus during the 2021-2022 season. Dr. Khaefi will succeed Dr. Ruben Valenzuela, LJS&C Choral Director since 2018. Dr. Valenzuela is stepping down to assume full time leadership of the Bach Collegium, of which he is the founding director. The LJS&C is sincerely grateful for Ruben’s outstanding tenure, and we are optimistic about the bright future that lies ahead for him and his family. We are equally optimistic about Dr. Khaefi’s appointment and the contributions he will make to LJS&C’s recently announced 2021-22 live concert season.

Dr. Khaefi was selected following a search whose success was much facilitated by the active participation of a small committee of long-time LJS&C chorus members, and executive and artistic leadership. Prior to joining San Diego State University in September 2019, Dr. Khaefi served as director of choral activities at Fullerton College and Towson University in Maryland. He holds D.M.A and M.M. degrees in conducting from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor and the University of California, Los Angeles, respectively. An active member of the American Choral Directors Association, Chorus America, and the National Collegiate Choral Organization, Dr. Khaefi is also the current Secretary of the Choral Consortium of San Diego.

Steven Schick, LJS&C Music Director, notes: “First of all, we want to thank Ruben for his successful tenure as Choral Director of the La Jolla Symphony and Chorus, and for his work in sustaining our activities through the pandemic. After a brief but thorough search, we have chosen Dr. Arian Khaefi, choral conductor at San Diego State University, to be our Interim Chorus Conductor. Dr. Khaefi’s resume is impeccable, both as conductor and voice teacher…the conversations he and I have had have been exciting, musically adventurous, full of care for community, and proved to me that he shares the values of collaboration and community that are the hallmark of the La Jolla Symphony and Chorus. Both musically and personally, I am delighted that Arian will be joining us.”

The LJS&C board and staff are equally optimistic about Dr. Khaefi’s appointment. We also thank our loyal community of supporters, who have sustained both the orchestra and chorus during the past few years of transition and uncertainty. As health conditions continue to improve, we look forward to a joyful rebirth this fall, with a robust season of live rehearsals and performances.
