Cox Communications and Computers 2 Kids, San Diego to Host ‘Back-to-School Computer and E-Waste Drive Through Event’ – July 31

Week long drive includes drop-off collections at Cox Stores in Chula Vista, Escondido and Santee Aug. 2-6; Public encouraged to recycle used computers and other electronic waste to help local students and families in need, and the environment

San Diego CA— Local families everywhere are gearing up for back to school, but for many households, meeting the technology requirements can be difficult. To bridge the digital divide, and keep electronic waste out of the landfills, Cox Communications and Computers 2 Kids, San Diego will host a weeklong drive that kicks off with the “Back-to-School Computer and E-waste Drive Through Event” on Saturday, July 31 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Cox Communications’ main campus parking lot, 5159 Federal Blvd., San Diego, Calif. 92105.

The public can drop off items such as used computers, laptop, tablets and printers, as well as other e-waste, at the drive through event. The technology will be refurbished by nonprofit organization Computers 2 Kids for low-income students and families – keeping e-waste out of the landfills and recycling them for those in need. Computers 2 Kids, San Diego uses Department of Defense National Industrial Security standards to sanitize all reusable hard drives.

“Supporting local education and eco-friendly practices are important to us. We believe all students and their families, regardless of economic status, deserve equal access to technology,” said Chanelle Hawken, Vice President of Public Affairs for Cox Communications. “As students head back to school, this drive will help Computers 2 Kids not only alleviate the burden for many San Diego families, but also help the environment by keeping e-waste out of the landfills.”

“An estimated 30 to 40 million PCs are recycled annually, and most are still in working condition,” said Cheri Pierre, CEO of Computers 2 Kids. “Those devices could be better used by refurbishing them for those who need computers for their education and online activities others may take for granted such as applying for colleges and jobs, virtual doctor visits or paying bills.”

Cox Conserves – the company’s environmental promise

In addition to collecting e-waste, Cox Communications employees and the California Cox Conserves Council will be onsite to provide information on eco-friendly practices that everyone can adopt. Through the company’s Cox Conserves initiative, created in 2007, Cox Conserves has a company goal to send zero waste to landfill by 2024 and be carbon and water neutral by 2034. The California Cox Conserves Council was established to engage Cox employees and implement programs and initiatives that work toward the company’s conservation efforts in California.

“Our team is committed to being a good steward of the environment and driving positive change for our planet,” said Hawken. “With each computer and e-waste item that is refurbished and properly disposed of, we’re all helping to build a better future for generations to come.”

Since 2012, Cox and Computers 2 Kids have partnered on Cox’s Connect2Compete program to connect K-12 families with computers and the internet for their children’s educational needs. In additional to recycling and refurbishing computers for low-income families and individuals, Computers 2 Kids also provides education, training and technical support. Through Connect2Compete, Cox offers $9.95 a month internet with in-home wifi for qualifying families.
